Consulting

Experience the fusion of imagination and expertise with training from 3 historically Black colleges (Jackson State University, Tennessee State University, and Texas Southern University).

Communitelling is a consulting agency that provides one-on-one consultations for community actors or social agencies (i.e. anchor institutions, faith-based centers, community centers, municipal governments, art centers, nonprofits, for profits, community based organizations, technology centers, and other community agents of change) in need of research support that can be used for pre- and post- grant award management, urban/rural planning and development goals, neighborhood asset management, media/community relations, community healing, and/or community asset planning..

Project Management & Charrette Support

Communitelling offers opportunities for community actors and/or agents of change to find community healing through positive storytelling. Dr. Nekya supports businesses and nonprofits by helping them identify and highlight positive assets that unify verses divide communities.

Grant Solutions & Community Storytelling

Community actors and/or agents of change hire me to help them with positive branding, research, culturally competent strategies, and authentic storytelling if they are run into barriers while developing grant proposals/management/reporting, urban/rural planning and development goals, neighborhood asset management, media/community relations, community healing, and/or community asset planning.

Bio

  • Dr. Nekya Young (she/her/ma’am) has more than 20+ years’ experience working for municipal government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and higher education institutions. She has held roles ranging from Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Planner & Technician; Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access, and Sovereignty Program Manager & Consultant; Director of Grantmaking & Community Impact; Urban Neighborhood Revitalization and Environmental Issues Adjunct Professor; Grant Administrator; Program Coordinator; Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design Specialist; Barbara Jordan Mickey Leland Research Scholar; Climate Corps Fellow; Diversity Ambassador; Geographic Information Systems Analyst; Historic Preservation Intern; Civic Design Intern; and GIS Intern. After completing her Sociology and Strategic Leadership degrees at Tennessee State University – Dr. Nekya earned her doctorate from Texas Southern University and wrote her recently published dissertation entitled “Identifying the Geography of Opportunities for Historically Black Colleges and Universities.” Her research and professional experience motivated her to continue to seek out culturally competent strategies that would include technology and storytelling to support underserved and/or under-researched communities around the world.
